Welcome! (Dutch below) I am Annabel Nijhof, a researcher in psychology / neuroscience. I am currently working as a postdoctoral autism researcher within the Department of Experimental Clinical and Health Psychology at Ghent University. Before this, I worked together with Prof Dr Geoff Bird (2 years as a Newton International Fellow at King’s College London), and with Prof Dr Roeljan Wiersema (3 years FWO Junior Fellowship) on projects related to the ‘self’ in autism.

Generally, my research interests focus on the behavioural and neural processes underlying how we engage and interact with others, and how we distinguish the ‘self’ from the ‘other’. I am particularly interested in the similarities and differences in these processes between individuals with an autism diagnosis and neurotypical individuals. In 2017, I completed my Ph.D. project on the topic of spontaneous mentalizing in adults with autism in Ghent, Belgium.

Further, I am passionate about science communication (see ‘Media’ or my BlueSky-account): I write a column (and occasional articles) for ‘Psyche & Brein’ (see ‘Blog’) and am co-editor-in-chief at In-Mind Nederland.

In addition, I volunteer for the Flemish Autism Society and in June 2025, I finished a postgraduate course to become an autism coach.

Welkom! Ik ben Annabel Nijhof, een onderzoeker in de psychologie / neurowetenschappen. Ik werk momenteel als postdoctoraal autisme-onderzoeker in de Vakgroep of Experimenteel-Klinische en Gezondheidspsychologie aan de Universiteit Gent. Eerder heb ik samengewerkt met professor Geoff Bird (2 jaar als Newton International Fellow aan King’s College London) en met professor Roeljan Wiersema (3 jaar op een FWO Junior Mandaat) op projecten gerelateerd aan het ‘zelf’ in autisme.

Algemeen richt mijn onderzoeksinteresse zich erop hoe mensen zich verhouden tot anderen en tot zichzelf, en hoe ze daarbij een onderscheid maken tussen ‘zelf’ en ‘ander’. Ik ben in het bijzonder geïnteresseerd in de overeenkomsten en verschillen in deze processen rond ‘zelf’ en ‘ander’ tussen personen met en zonder autisme, en onderzoek hiervoor zowel de hersenactiviteit als het gedrag. In 2017 rondde ik mijn doctoraat aan de UGent af, over spontaan mentaliseren bij volwassen met autisme.

Daarnaast ben ik gepassioneerd over wetenschapscommunicatie (zie ‘Media’ of mijn BlueSky-account): ik schrijf een vaste column (en soms artikelen) voor ‘Psyche & Brein’ (zie ‘Blog’) en ben co-hoofdredacteur van In-Mind Nederland.

Ik doe bovendien vrijwilligerswerk voor de Vlaamse Vereniging Autisme en behaalde in juni 2025 een postgraduaat om autismecoach te worden.
